One reason that a lot of people fear going to the dentist is that they are afraid that whatever work they are going to get done is going to hurt, and no one wants to be in pain. However, that isn't true. There are things that your dentist can do to help you deal with the pain that any treatment might cause. One of the things that they can do is to sedate you during the treatment. The sedation will allow them to treat you, and you won't have to deal with the pain or the worry of the pain. There are several different levels of sedation that your dentist can give you.
At this level of sedation, you are generally aware of what's going on, and you can answer any questions that the dentist or hygienist have for you. If they have instructions for you to do something during the treatment, you are able to do what they ask. However, you are going to be pretty out of it. You probably aren't going to be initiating any conversations, even if you are aware enough to answer questions.
This can also be called twilight sedation. You are still going to be conscious, but you aren't really awake at all. Nor are you really aware of what's going on. You shouldn't remember anything that happens while you are sedated, and if you do become aware of something, it will just float away like a boat on a river. It won't be anything that should affect you or cause you to come to more awareness. If you are going to go with this level of sedation, you aren't going to be able to drive yourself home. You will need to have a responsible adult there to get you home.
When you are totally sedated, you are completely unconscious. It's just like if you were to get surgery. Your dentist will have a specialist come in, and you will have an IV that will completely knock you out. If you have to have lengthy dental treatment done, this may be a good option for you. You will have to have someone drive you home, and you will need to have an adult with you for the rest of the day to keep an eye on you.
